I have young children, so Halloween takes a lot of planning and effort in our house.
We try to make outside look like Lothlorien and we make decorations and costume for weeks.

I, however, am always an elf - I have tons of long velvet dresses with embroidered edges and capes and my low suede boots.  I have really long hair so I don't need a wig, I just fold bandaids into cones to make my ears pointy and wear a circlet on my head.  Since the movies came out everyone thinks I'm dressed as Arwen (I have dark hair).  "Just an elf" is what I always say.

Does anyone dress up Middle Earth style?

I don't dress up as a Middle Earth character, but I do try and outmatch other people in the quest to look properly like something scary. Last year I was a werewolf, and the year before that I was Death (plastic scythe and all) but I like the wolf mask that I used last time so much that I think I'm going to give it another go.

That's cool that some of you guy's still participate in Halloween - the dressing up part.  I haven't dressed up for Halloween in years, since I was really young.  I dressed up like Batman once, and like a cowboy another time.  I don't have any kids yet, so we'll see what happens then.  I imagine I would take them out on Halloween, etc.

I have a bit of an obsession with costumes, though I don't wear them very often. I have things I've hand-sewn, things that I've found/bought and adapted, and other parts I've made from things picked up from craft stores, etc, etc. Actually, I'm currently in the middle of another project. Yeah, I need a life.

I am a HUGE fan of Halloween! It's a very big deal in our house. We throw a party every year, so there's a lot of planning involved around Halloween.
My son decided in July that he wants to be Saturn this year. (Yes, as in the planet) So, I started working on it right away. Talk about taking some work and planning! I really need to get cracking on it too. I'm not nearly as close to being finished as I'd like to be.
Last year I was Elle Driver, Daryl Hannah's character from Kill Bill. I dressed up as her when she posed as a nurse. This year my hubby and I are going to be Jack and Meg from the White Stripes.

Gliowien you sound like my kind of Mom.
Why can't you be one of the ones I have to talk to every day in the playground!!!
I spend all my time trying to 'fit in' so my children aren't shunned for playdates etc. - it's like high school all over again!!!

Ah yes, that is the stuff I'm not looking forward to! My son is only in Kindergarten, so I haven't really met any other parents yet. My good friends have trouble finding other parents to relate to also. They thought they found some cool parents when their son was in Kindergarten, but they turned out to be drug dealers!!  Shocked
Oh yeah, Halloween....Saturn is coming along nicely! I'm hoping to make some major headway on it this week-end. I really need to get cracking on planning the food and stuff for the party. Last year I made witch fingers and graveyard pudding.

Hm we don't celebrate Halloween here, it's actually a weekend dedicated to the solemn memorial of the dead.

Interesting fact, Melian.  Where are you from?

BTW: I love your nick name - Melian.  From Melian the Maia in the Silmarillion and also in the Children of Hurin.  In LOTR's speak, you're my mother-in-law.   lol

I'm from Sweden.

Although a certain americanization is in progress so some people do care about pumpkins and weird costumes but the majority no.

And I used to be Galadriel but that felt so 'oh i've seen the film and took my pick of the three women in it' so I went for someone a bit more mysterious, although I like the story of Galadriel the rebel but not really the Madonna figure Tolkien turned her into in the end.

Find a map, identify the land mass known as 'America' and go north.  laugh

My post said 'Where IN Canada' not 'Where is Canada'.
I just wanted to know because I am in Canada as well...
It's a big place.
