Yeah, yeah, I know. There are about a billion-zillion music threads here. But I swear this one's different!  Tongue
I'm just curious...what are everyone's all-time favorite bands/musicians? I really do find this kind of thing intriguing; I love hearing about music (and hearing music itself, too, for that matter!). Also, besides curiousity, I'm asking this cause I'm in the mood to listen to some new stuff and I'd love to hear some input from everyone.
Music is such a fun topic. ^^

You may have just asked the best possible question ever. I live in one great music bubble for most of my day, partly because it is an unwritten law in my house that the radio should never be off.

Anyhow, as some might know (Arwen, I'm looking at you here) I choose what stuff I like by individual songs, not one genre as a whole. Currently, I'm really into Lacuna Coil, which I was introduced to through some random video on Youtube, looking at songs like "Swamped" and "Heaven's a Lie" which are amongst a giant list of rock/melodic crossovers, which I really do enjoy. I would say that they are at present my favorite band, but then recently I found out about a Turkish group called Mor ve Ötesi (Purple and Beyond), with the song "Deli" (Crazy) and even though I only know what the lyrics mean from a subtitled version of the video on the band's site, I still think their music is really interesting. Also, look at "Kış Geliyor" because it's very good.

Changing the style completely, the two bands that started me off into enjoying modern music were Coldplay and Keane. Everyone knows who Coldplay is these days, so I'd say check out some of the lesser known tracks from the X & Y album, like "The Hardest Part" "Shiver" and "Don't Panic." There is the legendary "Yellow" as well, but I think that got around a bit when it was first released. Keane, similarly, have beautiful, well written music that really holds a chord with me. Ones to recommend are "Somewhere Only We Know" "Everybody's Changing" "Bedshaped" and "This is the Last Time."

Klaxons started a new craze for nu-rave. Look at "Magick" and "Golden Skans" then in terms of newer tracks, Late of the Pier have an excellent one called "Space and the Woods" and The Whip have a darker one named "Trash."

Bands like Hard-Fi are strongly recommended, and then Editors with "Escape the Nest" and "Racing Rats" with the echoing guitar brilliance.

I wouldn't be doing myself any honor if I didn't mention Muse. I don't even need to pick a particular track- just listen to them all and let the rock claim your soul.

I'm stopping here for a pause more than anything, before I implode with my own music happiness.

My favourite kind of music is best described as ethereal.....
Dead can dance, Lisa Gerrard alone, the Cocteau Twins, Eden, anyone with beautiful female voices and interesting instruments backing them.
I also love anything that falls into the gothic blanket.

My favorites as everyone knows on here are The Flaming Lips and Radiohead.

Diamond, I can imagine that you would love the Flaming Lips. You seem like a slightly crazy person who might like to hear some more than slightly crazy music.

Recommended tracks:
"Yeah Yeah Yeah Song"
"She Don't Use Jelly"
"The W.A.N.D."
"Lightning Strikes the Postman"

On more of a serious Lips side:
"Waitin' for a Superman"
"Do You Reallize??"
"The Gash"

And for one of the best listening experiences ever, buy the album "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" by the Flaming Lips and listen to the entire thing straight through. It's fairly mind blowing.

As for Radiohead, I'd recommend purchasing "OK Computer," considered to be one of the best albums ever made by anyone.

Other favorite bands: Blur, Primus, Pulp, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Sufjan Stevens, Justice, MGMT, Chevelle, Tool and many many many more.

I could see this becoming another Radiohead vs. Coldplay war between Insane and I, but since we are MET buds, I will call for a cease-fire for now.   Cheesy

All jokes aside, I am obviously a big time Coldplay fan and love virtually all of their stuff.  From Yellow, to Speed of Sound, to Clocks, and now my new fav, Viva la Vida, which a bought from iTunes a few weeks back.  Like my compadre Wolfy said, the stuff I like doesn't neccessarily depend on genre.  If I love a particular single, then I buy it off iTunes and enjoy it from there.  My most recent iTunes dld was the song Forever, by Chris Brown.  This is my favorite radio song right now - sweet when you pump up the volume and the bass.  But I like stuff all over the map.  And buy mostly just singles, except for Coldplay, where I buy the whole albums (still need to buy the whole Viva la Vida album; just bought the single only off iTunes).

Good new Beren, I was in Rite-Aid yesterday and I saw "X and Y" on the shelf for $4.99, and I seriously considered buying it. Unfortunately I didn't have enough money on me at the time. Tongue

Too bad, that's pretty cheap.  Maybe next time.

That'd be, specifically, Epic Metal. (Subgenre of Power Metal, AKA Melodic Metal). Bands like Rhapsody (whom I admire - any classic fans should recognize the first part of the Wizard's Last Rhymes Wink)

Counting Crows has to be my all-time favourite artist. Pop-rock with very emotional lyrics - I know what half of you're thinking; rolling your eyes at the "emotionality" of modern pop artists. But seriously, check out the Live at VH1 Storytellers DVD (or on Youtube). Adam Duritz talks a lot about the songs he plays and their backgrounds.

If you want an introductionary song, I'd recommend Youtubing "Mr. Jones" (the live version from VH1 is best), "Ghost Train," "Anna Begins" or my perennial favourites "Up All Night (Frankie Miller Goes To Hollywood) and "Miami."

(The most pissed off I've been the last year - with the exception of night to saturday this week, which I spent mopping up some hopped-up junkie's blood from the reception of the hotel I work at - was when Counting Crows cancelled the Scandinavia part of their tour)

As the best rock band . . . Well, it's got to be Kaizers Orchestra. I've been to Flogging Molly, I've been to the Dropkick Murphys, I've been to Melt Banana, I've been to the 69 Eyes, I've seen Sigur Ròs, I've been to an intimate Gogol Bordello concert for 700 people, but I have never, never seen anything like them live.

Oompah 'Till You Die ("Ompa til du dør"), "170", The Avenger's Waltz ("Hevnervalsen"), Dieter Mayer's Institute ("Dieter Mayer's Institusjon") and Breeze ("bris") are masterpieces in a genre dying of drought.
