Hello all,

I'm new here, and have a favour to ask. It's been a few years since I read the LOTR trilogy, so I need some help.

My cat Gandalf died two weeks ago. He was 17, and I'd had him since he was a kitten. He was my best furry friend and companion, and will be sorely missed. We buried him in the bottom of the garden.

The reason I'm writing is, we're preparing a little marker for his grave, and would like to put one of Gandalf's quotes on it. Something sage or light-hearted, perhaps. I'd find one myself, but it's a big trilogy and I'm sure there are readers here who could make better suggestions than anything I could find with what time I've got.

This is one heck of a way to introduce myself, I'm sorry.  Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Welcome to this forum! Please make yourself at home and don't hesitate to participate in any discussion.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat... The first quote of Gandalf that comes to my mind is the following:

"I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil."

(The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King - Book VI - Chapter IX The Grey Havens)

Perhaps a little bit too 'dramatic', but very suitable for an everlasting parting (as in the books). If I have some more time, I'll return to this topic.

I don't remember alot of LOTR since I haven't read or seen the movies for a very long time. But I think the quote that Mith gave was very suitable.

Also I want to welcome you to our home here Xena and sorry about your cat. I know how you feel. I had a cat once (Ranger) for 12 or so years and he got sick and I had to make the hardest decision I had to make so far in my life back  then. I had to put him to sleep. But I had found another cat just a few days bfore and we hit it off wonderfully in a pet store but didn't get her. So after 2 hours of my cat being put to sleep I went and bought my new cat (Somber, meaning sad and I got her on a sad day). I had Somber for 13 years and 4 years ago she ran away and never came back (I think she went off to die). So for 4 years I prayed for another. Even though I knew no other could take Somber's place. Until one morning 2 or so months ago I heard a meow outside and found a stray wild young cat. She didn't like to be held but we took her in and now is a part of the family and she loves to be held, her tummy rubbed, very playful, and loves to lick you all over.

Her name is CC and looks just like my old cat Ranger I had put to sleep a very long time ago (go figure). CC just had 4 beautiful kitten but they have been given away by now after weening.

Anyhow after all this rambling my point Xena is I know it's hard right now for losing your cat but pray and God will find a way to give you another. May not be right now but he will. Also no other cat can take the place of your cat but the love you will share with another will be special too and help you cope.

May God bless and be with you.

Thanks, everyone, for your contributions.  And for all your kind condolences.  After considering all the quotes, we've decided to go with this one:

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." That sounds like the sort of thing our Gandalf would think, in his own feline way.

Cassandra, he died of feline cancer and kidney complications.  Basically, old age - he was 17.

Scroll, so sorry to hear about Ranger and Somber.  But at least you have a new companion now.  We have other cats and they've been very affectionate toward me lately.  But Gandalf was one of the oldest friends I've ever had.

Many thanks once again, and when I'm feeling less mournful I'd like to visit this forum on a happier note.

Xena.

I am glad you have other companions Xena. My cat Ranger had Feline Lukemia (like aids in cats) he lived 2 years longer than expected. But he does live on in my heart and I am often reminded when I read the sympathy card the vet sent me after he died. So take comfort that your cat will live on within you and your heart.
