Can I just point out that the Prime Minister of Australia is actually John HOWARD, not Govard, as was stated above.

Anyone mind if I turn this into a debate about the North Korea situation in general? No? Okay.

Basically, North Korea is one of the most dangerous regimes in the world at the moment. They have the 4rth largest military in the world, and they are working on a nuclear program. Kim Jong Il is basically a child with a temper tantrum and diplomacy doesn't seem to be working.

I think war with them will be difficult, but it's inevitable. Thoughts?

Well, Australia has just announced that it will no longer allow any North Korean ships to dock at Australian ports, in line with the UN suggestions for showing our disaproval of the actions of North Korea. According to Kim Jong Il, this means war.

I mean he can't attack Australia... and we already know he's aiming stuff at Seoul.

Hadn't North Korea withdrawn its foreign minister(s) from the UN? There is no negotiation possible here. Kim Jong Il sees even the slightest intimation of an act to control the situation by another country, he accuses it of being a threat of war! If just about everything is offensive to North Korea, then it would take some very skillful diplomacy to avoid war.

I keep saying, the more we threaten the more he freaks like a child.
I'm not a tactical expert but
Send in surgical strikes to damage his offensive capabilites then send massive forces to defend the surrounding regions. Also prepare programs to send aid to North Korea after it's occupied.
Again, I'm not that great at this stuff, but  Undecided

The North Korean dictator, is crazy, he has new toys and he hates everybody because they pushed him down, he wants revenge, and now hes working on, he is strategically located in the middle of many of our allys so nuking him is out of the question, as of now if we strike he presses the red button and boom boom there goes a nuclear warhead strait towards america, right now its a ticking off contest between him and bush and theres a lot of talk  between them , talk is cheap, the time we are waisting is not

This supposedly inevitable war isn't going to get anyone anywhere. Diplomacy doesn't have much of a chance of success, but the more other nations press North Korea the less of a chance it is going to have. War is something we must try to avoid at all costs because when it gets to war, North Korea is going to have advantages over almost every country. In a sense, they broke the rules [about owning nuclear weapons], but when everyone breaks this code, [North Korea is] going to win because they were ready first.

Umm... no. If someone told you North Korea could nuke America, they're fearmongering.
It's doubtful he could even properly nuke South Korea, which would be his more immediate target.

I would also like to point out that there still isn't 100% confirmation that North Korea successfully tested a nuke. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3315282,00.html
The reports are still quite conflicting at this point.

I'm not downplaying the threat by any means, but let's keep everything straight. Zaku made a good point about fear mongering. There is plenty of it out there.

I heard last night that Kin Jong Il has apologised to Chinese officials for the nuclear testing, and has promised to get rid of the weapons if the USA will stop threatening financial repercussions.
