Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant books and find them to be a poor man's LOTR? I read the first one years ago at the insistence of a friend of mine and found the parallels to be very distracting. I've never read the rest of the trilogy, although that same friend gave them to me. Maybe it's time.

Never heard of them before.  I've read other fantasy author's as well - i.e. Roger Taylor - "The Chronicles of Hawlan" - actually pretty good; also "The Highwayman," by R.A. Salvatore - good also.  But as most people here, Tolkien is king, when it comes to fantasy.  I also love the Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis was also a great writer and was even a friend of Tolkien.

And it seemed to Thingol that this Man was unlike all other mortal Men, and among the great in Arda . . .

I found some rough similarities but really never read passed Wgite Gold Weilder as surely one of the least interesting and all round nastiest so-called heros a writer has ever come up with.  Tolkein could write about even just the passing scenery in a way that made it interesting, Donaldson could not.
