Who is your favorite Character from the books?

I personally think Aragorn is one of Tolkein's greatest characters.

From lotr i love Saruman and Gandalf as well but i prefer Saruman just because he is the typical wizard 'locked in his tower'

Hard to say.  I really like the relationships better than the characters.  I love the relationship between Gimli and Legolas.  The other relationship that I find endearing is Pippin and Merry.  I like their mischeviousness.

Gandalf was your typical old wizard of a man, who sends people on strange adventures, I always liked that.
Bilbo was a pretty cool one also.

I loved all the Elven characters of the books. The Hobbits and the Elves were my favorite characters in both the books and the movies but the Elven world that Tolkien created has always intrigued me.

Gandalf was my favorite character, because he represented wisdom and hidden power, and was also not portrayed as invincible or flawless.

For me it's a real toss-up between Aragorn and Gandalf.  Both are amazing and admirable characters.  I think these were the two characters that really inspired me from LOTR's.

Gandalf's wisdom, intelligence, endurance and strength of character, and strength in general were awesome.  His "resurrection" was awe inspiring.  The whole notion of "rebirth" or "resurrection" is profound in general.

Aragorn's fearlessness in battle, and will to persevere, even dispite his own doubts kept me on the "edge of my seat" so to speak in both the books and the movies.

Another favorite character I failed to mention is Faramir. He is the rejected son, the one who a lot is expected of, and yet is loved by the people. Aside from this, Faramir is very much an ordinary person, and yet is able to resist the allure of the Ring. His character develops much throughout the story.

I also admire the story of King Theoden of Rohan.  His bondage to Saruman was sad and unfortunate, but his freedom from that bondage through Gandalf was amazing.  Even though he doubts and is skeptical at times, he eventually finds his courage and comes through in the end.  Some of my most favorite dialogue involves Theoden and Gamling, and Theoden and Aragorn in The Two Towers.  I like stories about second chances and redemption - stories which reveal the notion that there is always hope (which the entire LOTR's trilogy affirms).

I don't have a single favourite character, but I've always been very fond of Treebeard. And Sam, and Gandalf and Aragorn. I love the scene in the books where the forest is suddenly outside... Helm's Deep, was it? It's been a long time and I've forgotten, but you know that battle I mean, and the orcs run into the forest never to be seen again. Gives me goosebumps every time I read it.

Andunie, yes, I'd forgotten how much I really enjoyed the character of Faramir, much more so in the books than the movie.  He was a brilliant character.
