Just look at my name...
I love Ulmo and Tom Bombadil, both polar opposites on the surface, but they seem to be the same (to me, anyway) when you look closely.
They both sort of command power and respect, but only within their little corner of the world, which they are content with.
I love complicated characters.

I dont think that it would possible for me to have a favorite character because Tolkien portrays them all in such different and unique ways. Its almost unbelievable how awesome he writes.

mine would be aragorn.  i think he is a very complex character.  i love his fierceness in war and yet he recites the poems caressingly.  i love his devotion to arwen too

I've found over the years my fave character has changed, i've watched the films so many times and read the books in between times trying to get my head round the time line differences... gah... anyways Aragorn was my first... lust....  dirrrty ranger....  loved him.... but then once i'd got that out of my system i kinda went through a frodo stage..... then someone esle has mentioned it on here too.. Gamling and Theodon that was pretty special, oh then i had a crush on Haldir.. now i'm beginning to see Legolas in a different light.....  /sigh i need chocolate

Strider,  AKA   Aragorn,  AKA Elessar (but I like him best as Strider!)  Smiley

aragorn's pretty darn awesome, but he's not really my favorite because he's more of a typical warrior, he's sort of 2-d, rarely makes any mistakes, and takes other people's judgment in stride.... I love the fact that he's a ranger, and is more commonly mistaken for a hobo than a king, but i also feel like he is most closely related to Beowulf

Gimli and GANDAlF rock, but they are also rather common archetypes drawn from the legends of king Arthur, grimms fairy tales, and other such things.

Frodo intrigues me because he is by far the most dimensional, flawed character in the book, and definitely an original tolkien creation.

SAM rocks. He's always loyal, always constant, never falters, never fails, and gets frodo to mount doom like nothing else could.

Also i like FARIMIR, i think he gets far too little credit, considering he was the Mortal Man who denied the ring, and gave frodo safe passage after the interrogation.

That is a very tough question, because I think all of the characters end up in a very good "blending", but if I had to chose One a few, it would be thus:

Aragorn Elessar, aka "Strider".  Beyond his Ranger personna, and beyond his prowress in battle, there was a sense of wisdom, compassion, and nobility in him.

Glorfindel...I liked this Elf!

Bombadil....because of his power and mystique.
