I have read all of them.  I read the LOTR's trilogy and the Hobbit when I was 12 or 13 - long before the LOTR's movies came out (I am now 28).  About four years ago, I read the Silmarilion and the Unfinished Tales (not on the list).  I re-read the Hobbit earlier this year as well.  I have been having fun with some of the Maps of Tolkien's Middle-Earth and with the A to Z guide on Middle-Earth.

I've read them all and enjoy them just as much when I re-read them.

And for anyone interested, get the reference book 'Complete Guide to Middle-Earth' by Robert Foster. That book contains it all.

Back in the mid-eighties, my friends and I used to play a game called MERP (Middle-Earth Role Playing), which was a 'Dungeons and Dragons' type game set in Middle-Earth. We played it for years!

I've read the Hobbit, The Fellowship, The Two Towers, and the Return of the King probably about twice each.  I'm working on the Silmarillion, but my schedule just kind of went insane, so I'm doing my best!  I'm planning on reading some each night, but I get so exhausted, though.

I've only read the Hobbit but I'm a huge Tolkein fan! And I am in the process of reading the other works of Tolkien.

I read through the trilogy a couple of times, oh, it must be about 30 years ago now, when I was in my late teens. Then I tried the Silmarillion but at the time, found it too heavy going.
I've now started again, have finished The Fellowship of the Ring and am about to start The Two Towers.
It's a bit like meeting an old friend you haven't seen for years! I'd also forgotten about the extra bits, like Tom Bombadil, and the elf Glorfindel, because they never made into the films.
I've got the Silmarillion lined up for when I've finished the trilogy, and I've also been reading The Children of Hurin.
I really shouldn't have left it for so long, but I'm making up for lost time!

Welcome to MET, Shiona!

Hey, Beren - the welcome thread's in the GD. For an Istari, that's setting a bad example. Wink

Yes, but being on topic, I've only read The Hobbit and LOTR. I know, I know...

No one's read Unfinished Tales of Middle Earth or any of the Middle Earth Dictionaries?

Haven't updated my read list recently, as it hasn't changed much, but now I've got (besides LotR, Hobbit, and Silmarillion), Unfinished Tales and Children of Húrin.

I have read all of the above "major" works at least a dozen times each.  I have also read all 12 volumes of "The History of Middle Earth", "The Children of Hurin", and "Unfinished Tales".  Add to that "Tom Bombadil", and "Farmer Giles", as well as "The Complete Guide to Middle Earth" and several of the analytical writings and Tolkiens only "authorized" biography.

The great thing about reading those major works frequently is that I always seem to find something different of overlooked each time I read them again.  Coupled with the "History", going back to the Big 5 allows me to fill in some gaps I might have not caught previously.
