I wish I could instill the same passion I have for Tolkien's works in my wife.  Well to be honest, I did force her to watch the films, many, many times.  Oh well maybe she will love Tolkien like I do - maybe someday!

Reading the books to your girlfriend....interesting tactic! I like this approach!  I have a couple of friends who don't share my passion for Lord of the Rings and I have been trying to find something to awake the Lord of the Rings spirit I think lies in us all but I don't know that my reading the books outloud to them would work. They might end up never loving them then!

It is amazing how many people will appreciate Lord of the Rings once they read it. Many people don't even try to read the books. Some think that they are overrated. Another problem is that more and more people are losing the patience of reading anything and are losing appreciation for literature and the written word.

I know it's rediculous... but, sadly, it is true. This is another good reason for people to read LotR (and related works) aloud to non-fans.

Very good points Andunie.  In our media/internet based society people care more about convenience and see reading as a burden and not as something that can be as relaxing or more relaxing than t.v.  I don't think you can ever replace actual books.  Who would want to sit at a computer and just read off of a screen all the time?  That would hurt your eyes.  I love to read, and to expand my horizons.  People have their own hobbies, but a little bit of reading would do anyone a lot of good.  Reading is so good for your mind.

The Hobbit boring?  That's LOTR's sacrilege.  I loved The Hobbit.

Heh, the Hobbit was a neat little story. It should be easier to read than any other books on Middle-Earth.

This goes for everyone... books are boring until you get into them.

It's pretty depressing how some people don't even bother reading the books because they're so long.  They're so much better than the movies!!!
I saw the 1st two movies before I read the books, and then I read the first book and was like "They didn't put Tom in!?!?!?!"

I got my friend to read The Hobbit, but all attempts to get her to read the actual trilogy have failed.

I was 10/11 years old when I read the trilogy, @#%!

Long? LotR is NOT long, especially since it's been split into three books. People are seriously paranoid; if they see a book with a spine thicker than a centimenter they despair. Also, many people who have seen the films think they know everything there is to know about the story, and as a result, don't read the books.

It was a then-LotR-obsessed friend that made me interested enough to start reading. That was, sadly, after I had begun watching the movies. Still, though, the best way to get other people to read Lord of the Rings is by encouraging them.

Yea, I know some people that don't read  LOTR cause it's long.... I don't care if a book is 3000 pages as long as it is good I will read it. I know some people who won't read books more then 300 pages Tongue

I once had a professor who had his own rule of thumb when it came to finishing a book.  If he wasn't into it by about the first 100 pages, he wouldn't continue.  He was a brilliant man and a huge LOTR's fan; he was also British.
