i wonder if it will be more of a story, or a history... like the silmarillion, or just like a more detailed story like something along the lines of the hobbit. it would be cool either way.

I am excited about this work.  I believe the title is The Children of Hurin.  Basically elaborates on the story and tradgedy of Turin.  Definitely a good one.  I will be waiting patiently for its release as well.  This would also be movie worthy, as are some of the narratives within The Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales.

It's already out, but I'm waiting for the price to come down.  Then, I'll probably buy it, put it on my bookshelf, and then eventually finish The Silmarillion.

This sounds good, especially since I enjoyed the Turin stories a lot. Has anyone read the Children of Hurin yet, and how does it compare to the other histories of Middle-Earth?

Yes, I read it about a month ago now.  I bought it on opening day - April 17.  I must say that it is really an amazing work, and will please the true die hard Tolkien fan.  If one is familiar with the stories of Turin in the Silmarillion, then one would have some background for the story.  However, in The Children of Hurin, the story is more developed and offers some interesting details.  Turin, as anyone who has read the Silmarillion would know, unfortunately has a tragic ending, but remains quite the epic hero in his own right.  You can see with this story how sometimes there isn't a "happy" or "fairy tale" ending.  But at the same time, I think think that one will still gain a great amount of admiration, respect and awe at the person and character that Turin embodies.  Personally I loved his character before, and now I love it even more.

On another note, I would have to give Christopher Tolkien a "thumbs up" for more than adequately explaining how he came to the final copy.  His explanations are not pointless, providing the reader with a lot of helpful information to do with how he composed the work, and why it took so long to put together, etc.  His explanations give the work a lot in the way of credibility and creedence.

Even one who hasn't read the Silmarillion wouldn't be completely lost either.  C. Tolkien included a helpful glossary of people, places and terms, as well as a map, showing the locations within the story.

I give it my personal "thumbs up" - an awesome and inspiring work!  Truly an enjoyable read!
