Ok I just heard on the news that (even though I knew for a while) that prince William (I think) is going into the army.

They asked if the prince would be in danger or at risk of going in?

What do you think?

I think with him being a prince he is more of a target.

It's actually Prince Harry, but yes. Living in Britain (and being updated with news) I know that his regiment is now definately going to be posted to Iraq, after great possibility that it would be.

My personal opinion is that anyone and everyone who goes there is at great risk. I disagree with war entirely, and this one mainly, for it has turned into a massacre of people on either side, with little purpose for being there in the first place. Of course, there is added risk on his part, what with being the Prince, and it would be tragic to loose him, or any soldier, in this most anarchic of wars. I only hope that nothing goes wrong for him.

I don't see it as a big deal at all, but im not British. I hope he does not get hurt, but i am not going to treat him any differently then any other soldier in iraq.

Very bad idea. I don't know what he's thinking.

By the way, he's been in the army for a while. The going to Iraq thing is news.

As soon as insurgents/terrorists figure this out, they will target his unit like crazy. If he gets killed, it will be a huge victory for them, and a major tragedy for Britain.
He's being selfish, putting his life out there like that. He's a representative of his country's royal family.

Please don't insult my country in front of me.

Propaganda? No. National concern is a much better assesment. He's going into a place more unpredictable than a teenage party for heaven's sake, and where anyone, even the best trained soldier, is at risk of what the opposition can throw at them. He hasn't willingly become the focus of the media, but of course they're going to make a fuss when one of the royal family fights for his people, which hasn't been done since the Falklands. He's trained as a soldier for some time also- I don't like this assumption that he is going there for the single purpose of heroic glory on a whim- and is apt and prepared (even keen) to go there. Not that the British want him to do so, but for now that's what is happeneing.

Well Zaku, I don't no about selfish. I don't think fighting in Iraq is selfish, in fact I love to see president Bush out there in Iraq fighting the insurgents. Wink

You always have such a negative view and little faith in others besides yourself. I completely agree with what Wolf says. It is very likely a figure of prestige will attract more attention from enemies, or at least as much as anyone else. He will also naturally attract an interest from his own people. I disagree with the conclusion that this is an act of selfishness and an attempt to grab attention for himself. People should be grateful that someone on their side is willing to fight for them, and work as hard as anyone else.

I think Prince Harry should be thought of as a hero.  He is an honorable man, to be willing to put his life on the line for his country, especially considering his royal status.  And if he dies, he will be even more of a hero.  For the soldier, to die in war is the most honorable way to die.  If he should come back (which I think he will) he will be a hero still.

I dont know anything about british royal family. But what I think about is, he is really a good guy, prtriot. I think other countries should gain something from him. They should understand whats going around outside the palace.

Predictably, his posting happened just a few days prior to the UK's announcement that they are withdrawing 1/4 of their forces from the war. (That's a cut from 7100 to 5000, for those not à jour)

Also, the prince will be deployed in a commander function, meaning - at the least - a 12-squad troop with armoured Scimitar-class vehicles at their disposition.

Maybe someone wants to make up for showing up dressed as a Nazi.

Well he's not going now for sure.  With some of the threats by the insurrgents recently toward the British troops and Harry personally, and the potential danger he would bring to British troops, it's probably good that he's not going.  Although I still think that he would be honourable if he went.

The latest news is that he's not going because that would put his unit in too much danger.
I think it was a good gesture to put himself out on the line with the other regular guys from his country, but it was probably good that he's not going since he and his unit would be in so much danger.
Applause to him, though.
