What was the point of sending extra troops? What did Bush think he was going to accomplish? It's already pretty clear that however many American troops are in Iraq, the situation is not going to change.
I have no idea, it's not even that much of an addition to the 120k already there. Also, more troops, as you said, won't change a damn thing, except give the insurgents a slightly larger target...

Only reasoning I an attribute it to, Bush is just a stubborn ass. He's had advisors telling him for a long time now that it won't work, including many army officials. The only supporters he's had (a "military historian" was one) have been attacked as having unrealistic views on the subject.

I totally think Bush is a terrible leader but pulling out right now would allow Iraq to plunge into total chaos. This is bad for the US and allies not only because of oil interests in the mid east but also because it would leave a power void for Iran to move in and take over. The only reason these Insurgents are such a threat is because Iran and other neighbors are secretly arming them and providing them with reinforcements. I don't think things are on the way to becoming another Vietnam we've already sacrificed too much but we cant get that back. I guess its really up to the powers that be to decide how many lives it would cost to accomplish our goals there... I just know that Bush is not even thinking it through but his time is almost up.

Here is what my hubby says should be done about the war and I have to agree.

Have all troops to pull out and surround the bourder. Let all those Iraqis that are tired of the fighting to leave. We put them up somewhere in a desert somewhere with food, shelter, supplies, and water.

Tell everyone else that wants to fight to go at it. No one goes in and no one comes out. No imports or exports. Just say," if you really want to fight then here is your chance go at it. When you are done fighting then we will come back in and help rebuild with supplies and help. If you run out of ammo then use what you got. We will not interupt in any way until you are done and tired of fighting".

The problem with that, however, is that all the innocent civillians who want to leave can't. Most of them want nothing to do with the fighting, and there are a lot of them. There is no way to move them all out without them being attacked, and it would be wrong to leave them in to suffer from the "do whatever you please" situation.

That is why we get the ones that are tired of the fighting out first.

But that's why it can't be done. Most of the people don't want to fight. That's millions and millions of civillians. It's just not plausible. Even if you relocated them all, there wouldn't be enough troops of any country to secure to borders of anything. Also, if the camps are set up, they are bound to remain for a long time, way past schedule. Look at hurricane Katrina; there are still people living in trailer parks with nothing.

Yeah, I still like the "leave american advisors to train the military, fast response units to keep violence down, and special forces to hunt terrorists" plan a lot better.

Except the Iraqi's don't want to be helped. You can't help someone who wants nothing to do with you. Basically, we should just need to get out of Iraq. The bad part is that its not going to happen anytime soon.

Sorry, but it really doesn't matter what the Iraqis want. If we get out, there will be slaughter. They want us out so they can get started with that. We simply cannot leave at the moment.

We should definately leave... not immediately, of course. Firstly, the situation in Iraq is pretty close to hopeless. The rivalry between the people have existed for a very, very long time, and they are not going to be solved by short-term solutions. Have the presence of foreign troops made much of a difference? If there have been any improvements, they are few and far between. I agree that abruptly pulling the U.S. out will do no good. The situation will simply deteriorate and worsen; every little effort counts. However, remaining in the Middle East for a prolonged length of time is not going to cull any benefits either.

Yea, but don't they have an obligation to the Iraqi people. If we leave now, the insurgents will set up a Islamic dictatorship, and it will be worse than when Saddam was in power. Im unsure on this subject. All i know is that what we are doing now is not working.

I want the troops to come home, they need to be pulled out of there immediately but at the same time this is something that is easiar said than done. If we were to leave I gaurantee you that all that is going on over in iraq will move right on over here. And thats what we are trying to avoid. Regardless to the fact that Bush doesn't want to pull them out. he knows that he messed up big time and now he can't fix it the way he needs to. I want Bush removed from office period because his whole way thinking is messing up this country.
