To us who have read all his works in the context of his Middle Earth, which one is the most interesting or engaging?  Or are they all too good to make such a distinction?

Same here. I have yet to read all of Tolkien's works, but of the ones I have, there is little to set one piece above another. Not only does all of his writing contain depth, detail, and meaning, but are also creative and enthralling.
