Hello, I will soon be in a speach competition at my school and I picked to read the poem "Over the Misty Mountains" by J.R.R. Tolkien and I was busy memorizing it when I stumbled upon this verse.

The mountain throne once more is freed!
O! Wandering folk, the summons heed!
Come haste! Come haste! Across the waste!
The king of freind and kin has need.

the "friend" has the 'e' before the 'i' and I have no clue why. It doesn't seem as though that is the British spelling, but I might be incorrect. Or maybe it is a copying mistake (I tryed 2 different sourcees though). If someone can tell me the answer that would be cool.

Keep me in your prayers, as I am not the best of public-speakers,
Thanks!

Is Over the Misty Mountains the title? Can the text be found in one of his books?

The beginning of the poem is in The Hobbit, sung at Bilbo's house in the beginning of the book. Tolkien extended the poem to 27 verses (counting the main chorus') rather than 10. The part of the poem where the line is from is in the extended version found on the internet. It is in the 21st verse. And yes Over the Misty Mountains Cold is the title.

Perhaps that answers your own question?

Edit: Look at Chapter 15 The Gathering of the Clouds of "The Hobbit" to find the correctly spelled version of that verse.
Edit 2: Beware that it is not the 'extended' version of the Song of the Dwarves, but a compilation of two Dwarf-songs (see "The Hobbit") and one made by Merry and Pippin (see "The Lord of the Rings" - Book I - Chapter V - A Conspiracy Unmasked). These three are presumably based on the same tune (although I personally doubt the second one is).

I was thinking there might be something fishy about the poem, (the second part of the poem has a lack of choruses) seeing as the length differs, but I found it at a website of famous writer's works and it it didn't look too unresourceful. Oh well, It has a good rythm and feeling anyway.
Thanks anway,
Monky

P.S. I'll keep you posted and tell you if I win a ribbon.

I ended up with a red (excellent) ribbon at our state competition for our school's association! Not bad I guess, but I wouldn't have minded a blue ribbon  Tongue .
Cheers,
