Don't read this post if you haven't or are not planning to read the book!

snips:
Actor Orlando Bloom is also set to make a guest appearance in the Hobbit film, reprising his role as elf Legolas from the Lord of the Rings. In the film, he will be shown instructing the character Bard in bow skills, allowing Bard of Dale to slay the dragon Smaug at the climax of the film.

Peter Jackson is said to be keen to pen many of the lyrics of the musical numbers in The Hobbit. The confirmation from Jackson's company came after a video was leaked yesterday on YouTube, showing Peter Jackson and various actors dressed as dwarves singing a song entitled 'It's a Lonely, Lonely Mountain (but together we can climb it).'

If anyone can find this video post it!  I've been looking for it all morning!

"Sir Ian Mckellen is set to play Gandalf in Peter Jackson's new Hobbit movie, as its script is changed to make The Hobbit film a musical."  This is the title of the article.  What surprises me is the fact that the script is changed to make the film a musical.  A musical?  I hope this is not the case.  All we need is for The Hobbit to look like Mary Poppins or The Sound of Music or some other cheezy musical.  Maybe Jackson and Del Torro will surprise us, who knows.  Anyone have any thoughts about the film being a musical?

I doubt that PJ and Del Torro have it in them to make things cheesey.

That might not be their intention, but I have serious doubts about any kind of musical.

maybe we should start a campaign for it not to be a musical.
i mean there is only one chance to make THE hobbit movie, and it should not be and shan't be a musical!!!!!

Ugh, if the movie was a musical, I would die of shame right there in the theater. >.<
I mean, if there was a song in there like Pippin's song in RotK I suppose it wouldn't be too bad...but still.
Peter Jackson's not know for his cheesey movies though, so there's always hope.

I agree with both you and Diamond.  I don't see the need to make it into one.  With all the success and accolades of the trilogy, why do this to the Hobbit?  I'd sign a petition to not make it into a musical for sure.  But if this is indeed the course they are taking, probably nothing will stop it.  Any other members thoughts would be appreciated.   Cheesy

This is part of the reason why I didn't see the musical when it was in Toronto - everyone tried to buy us tickets for it - I thought it was a travesty!!!

Musical on film and musical on stage are two very different things. If a musical version were ever made, it would have to stay on stage, because film adaptations/versions of musicals are really not all that great. The Hobbit film should not be made into a musical. I agree it would turn out to be a terrible, cheezy thing. But if other people really wanted to make a stage production, then fine. The musical version of LotR wasn't bad, but I don't know. It's just not the same.
