From his official website:

Q: Have you been approached yet by Peter Jackson or anyone else about  reprising your wonderful role as Gandalf for the two upcoming  "Hobbit" movies. I read that principal photography begins in 2009,  and I can't imagine those movies without you!

A: Encouragingly, Peter and Fran Walsh have told me they couldn't imagine The Hobbit without their original Gandalf.  Their confidence hasn't yet been confirmed by the director Guillermo del Toro but I am keeping my diary free for 2009!

I was hoping they'd ask him to be Gandalf again. I wouldn't even consider watching it without him as Gandalf as he is the only one who can really get it right. I need to look at this on his website.....*dashes off to look*

He's the only logical actor to return from the trilogy.  None better as Gandalf the Grey than him.

I know. If he isn't the one playing Gandalf it just wouldn't seem right. He is the only one for this. If he doesnt get it, I will be very angry. I'm repeating myself aren't I?

A Wizard is never late, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.
