From MTV's movie blog:

Indeed, nearly all of Aragorn’s romance with Arwen (Liv Tyler) was drawn from Tolkien’s appendices and retroactively inserted into the Ring narrative by director Peter Jackson. A similar ploy could be used to bring Aragorn back for Bilbo’s journey (or, perhaps more appropriately, to surround and follow Bilbo’s journey), since Tolkien provided an extensive backstory for the once and future king of Middle Earth in his other writings.

As much as I love Viggo and his protrayal of Aragorn, to include him would not be a good idea, since he is no where mentioned in the Hobbit.  Although during the Hobbit time-frame he would have been alive, except much younger.  Ian McKellan is the only actor I could see really continuing on with the franchise at this point.

It would also be interesting to see what they do with Ian Holm in this situation, because I know in the trilogy when they were portraying him as a younger hobbit they pinned his skin back, or something along that nature, so if they were intending on having him as the same character again, this might be done, or they get a younger actor in who looks like him (for the sake of fluency). As for Aragorn, I don't really think he has a clear part in the Hobbit, and if you have to forage the Appendices for material, that doesn't say much about keeping to Tolkien's main story either. He is inexcusably a great character to have in the Lord of the Rings, but I would want focus on Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves' adventures.

I totally agree with you guys.
I think the only reason they would bring Viggo back is that women love him and they want to have something for the women (those of us that actually like the story and don't need eye candy and romance are in the minority as far as hollywood is concerned).

They could expand the role of Bard from Laketown, who becomes the future king of the restored Dale, in the days that follow the Hobbit.  Bard has a pretty significant role in that he is the one who slays Smaug (thanks also to Bilbo's intel).  The ladies might like that.

This is not Aragorn's film.   Wink

Yeah, Aragorn doesn't have much of a part in the Hobbit, but I think it'd be neat if as the dwarves and Bilbo are going through some woods and the camera pans around and you see Aragorn sitting in the shadows all up in his Ranger gear and whatnot.
Of course Hollywood and my theories usually don't mix too well. Tongue

When I get a little money, I buy books.  If there's any left over, I buy food.

Fuck this, I'm going to Hogwarts!

Yeah, that would be a bad idea. Aragorn was barely, if ever, mentioned in The Hobbit. He doesn't play much of a visible part in the story and should not be brought in.

yeah, that would be cool. i think i like that idea. we get to see aragorn and he still doesn't have much of a role in the story.
