This article sparks an interesting debate...

I think Andy Serkis is extremely gifted and deserves any recognition that is available to other actors.  The academy made a mistake in not giving him an oscar.

I agree; motion capture is no less acting than any other form. For instance, an actor in a full-body costume is still an actor- it's the same concept. Andy Serkis is very talented and his character was perhaps one of the best-portrayed.

Motion-capture is probably even more difficult to do, since you have a lot less to work with.
However, not only should Serkis get credit, but also all the tech people who had to put all the digital stuff together.  (I don't know any of the technical terms for that)  I know I couldn't do any of the computer-y stuff anymore than I could do the actual acting.

Motion capture is as much art as it is science. After having worked on the art and animation side of a few small movies, I can really appreciate the amount of effort and money that went into the motion capture work on Gollum. It's well and truly insane.

I agree that Serkis should have had an oscar for his role in the Gollum character.  But I think the good thing about his role is that it has stirred up debate.  My hope is that such debate will only lead in the direction of serious recognition for these kinds of roles in the future.  A part of me cannot entirely blame the Academy/others for not giving Serkis an oscar, simply because film making is a continual evolution, and it takes awhile for critics/voters to get with the times.  The times are always changing fast these days.
