How much of a difference is there between the standard dvd's and those special extended versions? Is it worth the money to buy the extended versions?

The extended DVDs offer a lot more information about the making of the film (and we are talking four hours plus per DVD) and in terms of the film the extra footage does offer a lot more explanation in between sections that may once have been unclear- i.e how Aragorn recognises the horse Brego after his fall from the cliff of the warg attack on the Roherrim. I would really advise buying the extended DVDs, if you are interested in these aspects of the films creation, and also to see the parts of the film that just missed the cut!

However, I have heard tell of extended extended LOTR DVDs, and it is here I draw the line. Apparently there is little more on there than you would get just buying the regular extendeds.

What's also interesting about the extended version is that they play on Gimli's love interest with Galadriel.  It's almost humerous.  You don't see that in the theater version.

The extended DVD's of the trilogy are by far a must buy for any LOTR fan. One, it ties up many loose ends to the story's left behind in the movie series. And two, it gives much more information about the expanded Middle Earth, and is more accurate towards the books.

All kinds of DVD's are good but there must be always the best one. The  special extended versions DVD is best for me simply because of it's quality and special features. The disc is durable and you even play and watch it repeatedly. The standard DVD is affordable but it will not last long.

Might be just a tad late, but the 'Special Extended Edition' is the one to get! The one with the Green, Red, and Blue almost leather looking box, the 4 DVD ones. The new Limited Edition DVDs suck, double sided, barely any new special features, and there isn't any commentary for the movies, unlike the other EE above.

Ban ignorance, not books.

The point is that the standard DVDs were on sale recently for $6.50 each.  I finally upgraded from VHS (which I found at Wal-Mart for $6 each.)
I just depend on my friends, who don't mind spending $80 for the extended editions.  I think they found them on Amazon...

When I get a little money, I buy books.  If there's any left over, I buy food.

I got mine off Amazon too, and I would think they would be slightly cheaper now than when they were new releases. The box set is the one to go for (I didn't know there had been an extended edition as each film came out, so when the box set came along apart from me thinking it was completely new, it was also very brilliant).
