Ok I just watched the EE of ROTK again and just wondering if anyone can answer a question for me.

What are the Undying Lands and where is it? If Frodo  Kiss, Bilbo, Gandalf, and the last of the elves went there why can't they return?

I know I should read the books but just thought I could get the answer from doing so.

Thanks Nume for the info. I hate to read but the Silmarilion has really got my interest so the next time we go to the library I think I will get it and read it.

It is funny. I read "The Hobbit" way before I liked LOTR. Haven't really started reading LOTR, but now I want to read "The Simarilion" and I will.

You haven't read LOTR yet!?! You really should, you can't really appreciate the genius of Tolkein without reading the books.

I know. I have actually started FOTR about a little over a year ago and only got to where Frodo  Kiss has gotten past Tom.

When I do sit down and read it I like to place the actors from the movies in the characters of the book and I also compare to the movie.

I also do this with other movies and read the books.

You haven't really read LOTR's yet?  That's unbelievable.  Having read LOTR's is a prerequisite for participating on this site.  At least you read the Hobbit.  Definitely take the time to read the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales.  The Silmarillion might be tedious in some areas, but there is quite a bit of interesting narratives in it as well.  And seeing the movies before the books (speaking about LOTR's again) - your view of LOTR's is tainted to the movie.  But like a lot of people, the movies were their first exposure to LOTR's - and then read the books after.  I read LOTR's about 16 years ago, when I was 12.

I am planning to read the books but very interesting to read the Silmarillion though and going to as soon as I get it. I did see at the library another book by Tolkein called (I think) "The Death Of Sauramon(sp)". I am interested in it too and going to read it too later.

The Death of Sauruman?  That sounds interesting, probably taken from the books.  It seems hard to believe that a whole book could be written on that segment of the story - maybe there is more to it than that.  Let me know more about it if you can.  I am excited about The Children of Hurin, to be released sometime in the new year - should be exciting.

What is the Children Of Hurin? I haven't heard that one before. Actually I never have heard LOTR before either until the movies. Now how sad is that I ask? I think it is pretty sad myself (LOSER-me  ;D).

No worries.  At least your a fan, and appreciate the movies.  You also said you read the Hobbit, that's a great place to start.  The Children of Hurin is a story of Tolkien's that is unpublished, and will be by his son Christopher.  It is based on a story in the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales about Turin and his sister Nienor - supposed to be darker than what we read of Turin in the Silmarillion.

The tales of the undying lands are very good, but complicated, as there is a lot of geography invloved.
