In the movies trolls looked big and bulky and didn't talk, so how come the trolls in the Hobbit can talk and in the pics they just look like large men? Confused  Maybe it's just my copy.

From what I remember, Tolkien wrote about different types of Trolls. Mostly, they were like the ones in the Lord of the Rings Films - The Cave Trolls - big, ugly, a bit stupid and with no speech.
He did write about Stone Trolls though, that lived in Eriador (and turned to stone if they were caught in sunlight) - they spoke a limited kind of common speech.
I haven't read the Hobbit for a while, but I'm sure it was Stone Trolls that caught Bilbo and argued about how to cook him, because didn't they get turned to stone when morning came as they were so busy arguing they didn't notice the sun come up?
maybe that's the answer - stone trolls can speak (the Hobbit) Cave trolls can't (Lord of the Rings)!
