I'm having trouble getting through The Silmarillion.  I've tried taking notes, but that just takes awhile, and I've tried reading straight through it, but then I forget a lot of stuff!!
I know there isn't an easy way, but if anyone could offer a few helpful hints...?

There probably isn't a foolproof way to get the Simarillion read in one go.

What I did was first to plow through the book, then go through each chapter individually, and finally go back to read the parts that I didn't pick up the first few times.

Taking notes might be a good idea, but that takes a lot of work, it wouldn't end up very organized... and I'm just to lazy to do that.

I would recommend reading the Silmarillion first, followed by the Unfinished Tales, and concluded by The Book of Lost Tales.  The Silmarillion, for me, is a must read for all Tolkien fans.

After you read the Simarillion, understanding the other histories should be easier.

zygis1:  One other recommendation that I would have - is for you to buy either a Middle Earth encylopedia, or a set of maps pertaining to Middle Earth.  These kind of tools help to fill-in some of the gaps and questions you might have.  A personal favorite of mine is: "Tolkien's World From A to Z: The Complete Guide to Middle-Earth," by Robert Foster.  A very helpful and useful tool.   Wink

The Simarillion's tough to read.
i'll say! three or four years ago, i got 1/3 of the book finished and then couldn't read it anymore for some odd reason. i just got it as a gift from a friend and am attempting it again.

I think the book as a whole is great.  But there are parts in which one needs a little bit of patience and perseverance.  If you find youself unengaged, wait a few more pages, or even another chapter, and things will get more interesting.
